Drivers following too close caused a nine-car accident on Interstate-405 Sunday afternoon that shut down two of three lanes of traffic for about an hour, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The accident occurred at about 1:26 p.m in the right lanes of southbound I-405 near State Route 169, state patrol spokeswoman Trooper Christina Martin said.

“There were a whole lot of drivers following too close,” Martin said. “There was no swerving or anything and they were literally stuck together in a straight line when I saw them.”

She said state trooper was investigating to determine what initially caused the chain-reaction accident.

Martin said a few people were treated for minor injuries at the scene of the accident and that five of the nine cars had to be towed away.

Traffic backed up for approximately two miles, she said, but the road was being cleared by 2:30 p.m.

A Highway 2 crash west of Libby resulted in the death of five people on Monday morning. Jack R. Flasche, 68, his wife Lois L. Flasche, 66, and their backseat passenger, 55-year-old Theresa C. Merritt – all of Troy – died in the accident. Sherry Lynn Thompson, 41, and her 10-year-old daughter, Kendra – both of Eureka – also died.

Thompson’s 16-year-old son, Braden, was transported to St. John’s Lutheran Hospital in Libby and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The teen was a front-seat passenger. As of presstime on Monday evening, his condition was unknown.

Rain poured on Troy and Libby emergency responders as they worked on scene. The accident forced officials to close both lanes of traffic for an extended period of time.

Bryce Ford of the Montana Highway Patrol said Thompson’s 2004 GMC Yukon sport-utility vehicle was traveling west on Highway 2 when the driver for an unknown reason lost control of her vehicle and slid sideways into the eastbound lane directly into the path of a 2004 Dodge Stratus driven by Jack Flasche.

Both vehicles collided at highway speed, Ford said. It was raining and the road was wet at the time of the accident, which occured at about 10 a.m., at mile marker 25.1 approximately six miles west of Libby.

Monday’s tragedy is the second on Highway 2 this month. On March 6, four people were killed in an accident near Happy’s Inn.

The cause was still under investigation at presstime Monday. Ford said excessive speed, alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the accident pending toxicology results from the State Crime Lab in Missoula.

All three occupants in the Flasche vehicle were wearing seatbelts and the front airbags deployed. Two of the three occupants of the Thompson vehicle were wearing seatbelts.

Seattle, WA—A teenager was arrested after he drove a SUV through Shorecrest High School, 75-feet down the hallway and into a security office. The 17-year-old teenager crashed through the high school around 10:00 p.m., in King County, as reported by The Seattle Times.

The King County Sheriff’s Office reported that the teen drove a 2002 Subaru Outback through the doors of Shorecrest High School, down the hall about 75-feet and crashed into a security office. Police located the teen about an hour and half later on the school property after running the tags on the car, and discovered that the car belonged to the boy’s parents. The SUV was reportedly found with broken walls on top of the vehicle. The boy was arrested by police officers an then taken to Harborview Medical Center “for a medical evaluation.” Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors. Thankfully, there was no structural damage to the building, nor any reported injuries. The car had to be pushed back down the hallway of the school to get the car out of the building; the teen’s parents later retrieved it. A full investigation is underway. It was not reported what the boy was charged with.

A 26-year-old man was hit and killed early this morning by an alleged drunk driver.

An Arlington man was walking in the 10400 block of Smokey Point Boulevard just after 2 a.m. when a driver struck him and left the scene, Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said. When medics arrived, passers by were performing CPR but the man couldn’t be revived.

Meanwhile, a Washington State Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle speeding in the area. The driver asked the trooper what he had hit, and the trooper contacted Marysville police.

Detectives learned that the driver allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .177, Lamoureux said. That’s more than twice the legal limit.

The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide.

While it will never bring the victim back, in incidents like these a wrongful death settlement is very possible. To schedule a free consultation with our attorneys call (800) 282-4878.

Two pedestrians were hit by a car on the WSU Campus, with the call going out for emergency crews to respond to a trauma at the scene. Details are still coming in about this accident, but it appears that there were indeed injuries at the scene. The accident reportedly took place at around 7:30 A.M. this morning, and was still blocking traffic on the Washington State University Pullman Campus.

The update of the accident is that it took place just outside of the Gannon-Goldsworthy residence halls on Stadium Way, and the driver of the vehicle which caused the accident has now been arrested by authorities. It is being reported that the driver hit two pedestrians that were in two separate crosswalks on Stadium Way, and that he also crashed into the center median at one point.

The driver hit someone outside of Gannon-Goldsworthy and then his a second pedestrian outside of Wegner Hall before his battered car finally came to a stop. It was at that point that the suspect took off running, and was later tracked down by police and arrested.

The first student that was it is suffering from head and leg trauma, and the second student suffered severe leg and arm trauma. Both were transported to the Pullman Memorial Hospital where they ae being treated for their injuries. The names of the students that were injured has not yet been released, and Stadium Way is closed off for a short span while authorities continue to investigate what took place.

Stadium Way is a street that goes directly through the Washington State University Campus and connects nearly everything together. Both the football stadium and the basketball arena are located on Stadium Way, as well as numerous other buildings and residence halls. There are a number of crosswalks, and students always cross this road throughout the day. The speed limit on Stadium Way is also only 25 miles per hour.
