Newark child dies in apparent furniture accident

A 2-year-old boy died inside a home in the city’s South Ward tonight, in what appeared to have been an “unfortunate accident” involving fallen furniture, police said.

Officers responding to reports of an injured child in the 300 block of Clinton Place entered a home to find a 2-year-old child unconscious and unresponsive shortly after 8 p.m., said city police Detective Hubert Henderson. The child was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The child was apparently watching television with his older brother when he opened one of the dresser drawers, causing both the dresser and the television to fall. The dresser and the television struck the younger child, causing serious injuries, Henderson said.

The boy’s mother was not home at the time of the incident, according to Henderson, and his grandmother was watching television in the front room of the house.

While preliminary details suggest the boy’s death was an accident, police remained at the scene tonight making a final determination, Henderson said.

Wellesley Staff Given Insulin Instead of H1N1 Shot

A medical mix-up made some teachers in Wellesley sick.

Several staff members at the Schofield School thought they were being given the H1N1 vaccine on Friday. Instead, they were given a shot of insulin.

Many people were shocked by the news.

“When I heard this, I was kind of taken aback,” said Jackie Norton, a parent.

In a letter to the school’s community, Bella Wong, the Superintendent of Wellesley Schools, said: “It is clear a very serious error did occur, and we will be fully investigating this event…Once the error was discovered, an immediate attempt was made to reach all staff that had received any shots at school on Friday.”

Diabetics take insulin to regulate their blood sugar.

“They’re trying to handle all these different shots and I can see…there’s enough of them going around, something’s bound to happen,” said Mark Webb, who works in Wellesley.

The insulin came from the supply on-hand at the school for diabetic students. No students were impacted. It is still unclear how many staff members were affected.

Those who received the insulin shots were treated at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and all are now fine.

The person who administered the shots is now on paid leave.

Boise construction worker survives nail through heart

A Boise construction worker has survived a nail through his heart.

Eric Davis, pierced by a 3-inch nail from a nail gun, was released from a Boise hospital Christmas Day.

The gun bounced off a ladder Tuesday at a construction job at the Tamarack Resort in Valley County, according to KIVI-TV (Channel 6). “My hand just slipped and hit the trigger,” Davis told the station.

“He could feel it move every time his heart would beat,” said his wife, Jennifer Cafferty-Davis.

No one had pulled out the nail, and that kept him from bleeding to death, Cafferty-Davis said. Davis was taken by ambulance to a McCall hospital, then flown to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. There, surgeons opened his chest cavity, his wife said.

Idaho Man Sues, Alleging Docs Left Device in Knee

A Sun Valley man who says he suffered 10 weeks of joint pain and stiffness before doctors discovered they’d left a broken device in his knee during surgery is suing for unspecified monetary damages.

David Robrahn filed a lawsuit in 5th District Court in Blaine County this month naming doctors Anthony Buoncristiani and Delmer Pletcher, the Mountain Express reported.

Also named in the lawsuit are Sawtooth Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, where Buoncristiani and Pletcher practice, and St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, where the surgery was performed.

Robrahn alleged an X-ray performed on Feb. 11, 2008, more than two months after his surgery, showed a “foreign body.”

According to the lawsuit, Buoncristiani performed follow-up surgery the next day and removed what appeared to be a broken surgical device from Robrahn’s knee.

Washington Man Killed by an Alleged Drunk Driver in Marysville

A 26-year-old man was hit and killed early this morning by an alleged drunk driver.

An Arlington man was walking in the 10400 block of Smokey Point Boulevard just after 2 a.m. when a driver struck him and left the scene, Marysville police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said. When medics arrived, passers by were performing CPR but the man couldn’t be revived.

Meanwhile, a Washington State Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle speeding in the area. The driver asked the trooper what he had hit, and the trooper contacted Marysville police.

Detectives learned that the driver allegedly had a blood alcohol level of .177, Lamoureux said. That’s more than twice the legal limit.

The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of vehicular homicide.

While it will never bring the victim back, in incidents like these a wrongful death settlement is very possible. To schedule a free consultation with our attorneys call (800) 282-4878.

3 Workers Hurt in DC Subway Crash

Officials say a Washington Metro subway train crashed into the back of another at a rail yard, injuring three workers.

The Metro transit agency says injuries were minor and not life-threatening. No passengers were on board when the crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Metro says a six-car train was returning to the West Falls Church Rail Yard in northern Virginia when it rear-ended a parked six-car train. Two workers were cleaning the parked train to get it ready for service.

Metro officials are investigating.

The crash was the latest accident involving Washington’s rail system. A June crash killed eight passengers and the train operator. A track repairman was killed in August when he was hit by a gravel spreader. Another worker was killed when he was hit by a train in September.

If you have been injured in the state of Washington on a subway crash, you should be financially compensated for your injuries. You are welcome to contact our Washington personal injury lawyers for a free initial consultation.
